How to read results
- Rioja Gran Reserva spends 5+ years aging 鈥?best after 10鈥?5 years. Crianza (2 years) is everyday. Reserva (3 years) is mid.
- Ribera del Duero has higher altitude 鈫?bigger temperature swing 鈫?thicker skins 鈫?more tannin. Vega Sicilia is the apex.
- Priorat = slate (llicorella) soil. Concentrated, mineral, age-worthy.
- Rueda Verdejo can be too herbal for some palates 鈥?try Marqu茅s de Gri帽贸n or Naia for softer style.
- Albari帽o loves shellfish. Salty, bright, low alcohol.
- Sherry: Manzanilla (Sanl煤car, dry), Fino (Jerez, dry), Oloroso, PX (sweet). Drink cold.
Limitations
- DOs cover broad regions. Sub-zones (Rioja Alavesa vs Rioja Alta) make a difference.
- Producer > region. A bad Ribera from a corporate winery vs a great Bierzo from a small producer 鈥?Bierzo wins.
- For Spanish wine by the glass in restaurants, look for "D.O. Rueda" / "D.O. Rioja" labels and check vintage.
